Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
Everyone is fair game if I'm playing an evil character.
If I'm just playing as me, I usually leave the normal citizens of Skyrim alone. But if I'm having a bad day, there will be a lot of orphan children wandering the streets alone, accompanied only be the bodies laying in the street.
I need to get a PC so I can kill the children. Don't stop until every Hold and town in Skyrim is devoid of life!
The citizens of Skyrim only live because I allow them to.

And because of the restrictions placed on you using a console lol.
Wish I could play on PC but my PC is about 10 years old and my new laptop only has the I3 processor run Intel HD graphics so I think Skyrim would destroy it quicker than my Redguard dispatches goats.
The other day when I was finishing play for the night I saved, turned around to Lydia and beheaded her before turning the PS3 off. I felt so wrong I almost turned it back on again to apologise lol

Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
my current character has no problem killing anyone as long there is something in it for him... generally he won't kill if there is no gain...
...he likes the towns becuase they are how he makes his money, so he tries not to mess with townsfolk too much... but he has been known to rip apart the occasional lone hunter of fisherman for sport on rare occasions...

I've always had trouble playing an evil character in these kinds of games, but it DOES amuse me to no end that it is an option to essentially kill (nearly) every NPC in the game.

Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
I am also unaccustomed to playing an evil character in a video game, but in Skyrim I would have a lot of trouble being good (being evil is just too much fun!). As a result, no, I don't think killing is wrong. I love decapitating characters especially. It's just a game - it's not as though I actually condone murder, so I can't say it bothers me in the least. Maybe if I try playing through it as a "good" character I will have more difficulty with killing. Even in that circumstance, if someone tries to kill me and I kill them instead ... well ... it was in self defense.

The only NPC in the game I thought deserved to be murdered is the Riften orphanage lady. You can administer a craniectomy on that hosebag with impunity, since you don't incur a bounty in that particular case, so have a blast.
Nazeem, the snob in Whiterun who continually mentions the Cloud District and why I don't deserve to soil the place with my presence, is certainly deserving of a punch in the nose (I've gotten arrested for assault on more than one occasion), but I don't kill him. As the Dovahkiin, I am above that.

Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
I didn't even want to have to kill the Orphanage Lady... I wanted to convince the kid that killing anyone is wrong. I guess it's just my nature.
Once I did kill the bitchylady, I was like, "Oh, well. Maybe she's just going through menopause & going through a rough time. Maybe the kids are exaggerating about how mean she is (kids DO tend to do that). Who am I to say judge why she deserved to die & not anyone else? Oh, well. since I've already "broken the seal", might as well off anyone on a whim".

Did you hear her speech to the kids? That counts as verbal abuse in my book.

Yeah, but that could just be the menopause talking.solitude1984 wrote:

"Listen, junior, killing anyone is wrong and you shouldn't do it."
"Didn't I just see you massacre that entire band of robbers?"
"................... That was... er... different."
"How?!"
"I'm dragonborn. "

That sounds like an excuse to do anything!
"Oh my god! You just killed my entire family and my horse!"

Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
I don't have a problem with all the killing but I tend to thing of it as the cost of doing business. There is a reason for every kill and it's sacrificing a few to save the many type thing. I do not off people just to Kill...not yet anyway! Some of the quests make it very temping to go on a rampage.
Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
Heck yeah its ok killing the NPCs, i feel bad though if they are poor so i just steal everything from them instead.

Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
Ok, here's a question - hell, this could even be a topic for the podcast - Is it possible to create a character that doesn't really kill anyone.
I've been role-playing Skyrim a lot, as I've stated before.
There are things in this game I have yet to accomplish. I have barely leveled up Alchemy or Enchanting, and I've been meaning to read more of the in-game books.
So I was considering, for a few months now, about creating a guy who is merely a scholar and scientist. I was thinking he could use some magic as a defense against whatever attacks him. But he would travel the land, locating dungeons and towns, and shrines and crap. Also, he would pick up all of the books in Skyrim, and try to find space for them in whatever houses he can afford(not killing = no cash in Skyrim apparently). I would experiment with Alchemy and Enchanting to learn the secrets of all things Skyrim, as well as selling those items for cash for my pilgrimages.
So whatcha think? Is it possible to create a build who performs the least amount of killing possible?

Even allowing for the killing of animals, it's entirely possible, but it would certainly make for rather frustrating gameplay if you mean to go outside of cities into the wilderness. There are plenty of bandits, highwaymen, random mages, etc. out there, who give not one single $%&#@ if you are a peacenik.
There's always going to be someone who's out to get you at all times -- this is Skyrim, after all. It is not a peaceful place. It is not a safe place. Getting from point A to point B without causing death requires vigilance and a bit of craftiness. I might venture the opinion that becoming a stealth mage who makes use of illusion, paralysis, invisibility, and so on to cause distractions and allows you to slip away from enemies without engaging them (and also to pickpocket them of their loot rather than killing them to obtain it).
One thing you're definitely going to have problems doing is completing things like Daedra quests, when you pretty much have to kill something to complete them. I suppose you could RP your way out of that by making exceptions for, say, the undead ("I was just returning them to their rightful dead state", you could say). So, no, you wouldn't be able to go all the way through the game without ending some lives, but I suppose that sort of character build would be a fun challenge.
Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
Well I wasn't going to cross killing out completely. There would be exceptions. It's Skyrim. Ya gotta kill something. Animals are ok. I haven't really figured it out yet.

Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
I suppose the middle ground would be, don't provoke attacks. Don't kill if you can sneak/pickpocket instead. Don't pew-pew unless pew-pewed upon. If you bring down animals, make sure to eat them and use their pelts (I do that already; if I kill a deer I eat venison steak that night).
Re: Is murdering people in Skyrim wrong in your eyes
Totally agree. There was rumor of a player who did try to go through the game without killing a single thing, but I'm not sure how far he got. There is plenty of studying and such to do in Skyrim that you could go through a large chunk of the game before you had to consider offing somebody!Minus2Degrees wrote:I suppose the middle ground would be, don't provoke attacks. And to answer the main topic in this forum: I do not believe it is wrong to kill and NPC, unless it goes against the backstory/alignment of the character you are playing. The majority of us as I can tell are RPing our toons. One thing I notice is I tend to play both styles. My original character was more of a Paladin and if he had to kill someone I would send him around to pray at the temples in the major cities. My other character is a fallen Ranger, so he struggles with the unnecessary kill, but he does so to survive himself.
