Malborn...destined for death
So, I'm making my way through the Thalmor Embassy and I get to the interrogation room. I've done this quest before with another character and I failed to save Malborn from the Thalmor. Having learned my lesson from last time, I picked up the book on Esbern and released the prisoner without asking him any questions so that the Thalmor holding Malborn don't get triggered yet. I make my way up to the door that they come out of and crouch and read the book to learn about Esbern. When the Thalmor come through first, I FUS-ROH-DAH them, barely missing Malborn and proceed to kill them with my bow. Sweet! Saved the Bosmer!
I successfully escorted him out after killing the frost troll. We all walk outside and say our goodbyes...and then my first ever ELDER DRAGON swoops down and one-shots Malborn. DAMMIT! Since I'm level 42 and my bow does 148 damage, the Elder Dragon wasn't all that hard, but...Malborn died anyway...maybe he's just destined to die?
Guess I'll just have to hope for better luck with one of my other half-dozen characters I play as...

Some one always dies with me. If it's not the elves, it's the troll.

Re: Malborn...destined for death
You know, I had the same problem during my first playthrough -- once I had gone downstairs and released the prisoner who was chained in his cell, the guards came in with Malborn, and proceeded to beat the crap out of him. I couldn't make it back up the stairs in time to save him, every single time.
But then I rolled a new character and waited until I was a higher level and had better fighting skills. That time, I werewolfed my way into the place (see [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for the details on that) and blood and guts and pieces of Thalmor pancreas flew gaily about in a red-tooth-and-claw cornucopia of savage butchery murder.
Once I had returned to my glorious Orcishness and had killed the two guys in the interrogation room, I galloped back up the stairs to find Malborn and the two guards standing in the hallway there. Not acting or anything, just standing around like they were on a movie set waiting for their cue.
I gave them their cue, all right. Two of them, through each of their necks. Malborn didn't even get a scratch on him.

Did you go back through the door that they come through or were they just waiting at the top of the stairs? For me, they didn't come through until I read the book.

I never read the book at all; instead, I went and talked with the prisoner, hearing him out, and then releasing him. Once I had done that, I immediately turned and ran back up the stairs with the intention of reading the book once I was in position. By the time I had gotten around the corner to the upper hallway, though, the two guards and Malborn had come through the door and were just standing there.
I stood and watched them for a full minute, waiting for them to start acting, but no one moved. So I just sprinted in and SCCHHLLLKKK made a couple of Thalmorburgers.
Re: Malborn...destined for death
The thing I find more annoying about this time in the quest is getting Malborn to show up at all. I release the prisoner first hand. The dude's been chained for days, the talking can wait. We get to the exit, and nothing happens. I think it took me 10 minutes of running around and raging before I talked to the guy, and then Malborn showed up.
That was irritating. It happened twice. My memory sucks.
